The True Drivers Union has asked the Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor to offer an apology to commercial drivers for deceiving them over the GHC1 levy on every litre of fuel.
The Union says prior to the implementation of the policy, the Minister met with commercial drivers and informed them that the implementation of the levy would have no impact on the cost of fuel at the pumps.
However, that has turned out to be false and, therefore, the Minister must immediately apologise to them for the deception.
Public Relations Officer Yaw Barimah indicated that the leadership of the Union, after meeting with authorities, convinced their members to support the levy because it would not reflect on the prices of fuel.
“But currently, we are being insulted and attacked due to the situation. Our members have accused us of conniving with the government to deceive them into supporting the levy. We trusted the Minister because he publicly made the same remarks that the implementation of the GHC1 levy would not affect fuel prices. He appeared before Parliament and again gave the same assurance.
However, when the implementation started, we have seen the adjustment of prices upwards, and that is not what we were told. We are calling on the Minister to apologise to drivers so that our members will not hold the view that we deceived them. Reputation is important, and we want to protect that. So we are calling on Mr. Jinapor to do the honourable thing and apologise,” he stressed.
