Hon. Nasira Afrah Gyekye, Member of Parliament for Sekyere Afram Plains, has called for the revitalisation of the industry, citing its potential to significantly contribute to the country’s economy.
Presenting a statement in Parliament, Hon. Gyekye stated that the industry’s contribution to GDP has declined significantly since the 1970s, but with targeted government support, private sector participation, international partnerships, and innovative design, it can be revitalised.
The proposal highlights several competitive advantages of the garment industry, including skilled labour, proximity to raw materials, and access to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The Member of Parliament proposes the establishment of garment factories in each of Ghana’s 16 regions, not just as production centres but also as hubs for training and empowerment. This initiative is expected to create jobs, preserve cultural heritage, and promote economic growth.
She called on Ghanaians to support President Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy Policy allowing for continuous production, warehousing, logistics, and export operations.
According to Hon Gyekye, the benefits of revitalising the garment industry are numerous, including increased GDP contribution, job creation, and cultural preservation.
She said by adopting this proposal, the government can position Ghana as a leading hub for garment manufacturing and exports in West Africa, promoting economic development and empowering Ghanaians.
