Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim constituency, Hon. Owen Kwame Frimpong, has congratulated the Ghana Black Queens on their thrilling 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Algeria in the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The win has not only brought pride to the nation but also joy to the MP’s constituents, particularly in relation to betting and taxation.
According to Hon. Frimpong, the current government’s removal of betting taxes has allowed youths in his constituency to receive their winnings in full without deductions. “The youths in my constituency were so happy because the previous NPP government imposed taxes on betting, but this time around, the current government led by President John Dramani Mahama has removed the betting taxes,” he said.
He said the Black Queens’ journey to the semi-finals has been impressive, considering their performance over the years. In 2016, they finished third in the tournament, followed by a group stage exit in 2018.
The 2020 tournament was cancelled, and they failed to qualify in 2022. However, in 2024, they reached the quarter stage and have now made it to the semi-finals.
The Black Queens will face Morocco in the semi-finals, marking the first time the two teams have met in WAFCON history. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, at 8:00 PM GMT at the Stade Olympique in Rabat.
Hon. Frimpong has prayed for the team’s success, hoping they will win against Morocco and bring more joy to the Ghanaian people, particularly those who have placed bets on the team.
