Agencies that rated our sovereign creditworthiness as junk are upgrading our ratings – Ato Forson

Ghana is experiencing a robust economic resurgence, with key financial indicators demonstrating substantial gains in the first half of 2025, according to Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson.

He attributed the gains to a recent upgrade by Fitch Ratings, a successful disbursement from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and an unprecedented appreciation of the Ghana Cedi.

On June 17, 2025, Fitch Ratings upgraded Ghana’s Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to ‘B-‘ with a stable outlook, from ‘Restricted Default’ (RD).

This upgrade signifies growing confidence in Ghana’s economic stability and ability to meet its financial obligations.

According to the Minister, the successful conclusion of the fourth review by the IMF Executive Board on July 7, 2025, triggered an immediate disbursement of US$370 million.

The amount is expected to provide crucial support to the country’s economy. Dr. Forson stated, while presenting the mid-year budget review on Thursday, July 2025, that the Ghana Cedi has recorded an unprecedented level of appreciation in its 60-year history. The stability of the cedi reflects improved economic fundamentals and investor sentiment.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson emphasized that these gains underscore the government’s commitment to ‘Resetting the Economy for the Ghana We Want.’ The positive shifts indicate that rating agencies, which had previously classified Ghana’s sovereign creditworthiness as ‘junk,’ are now beginning to upgrade the nation’s ratings, reflecting renewed confidence in Ghana’s economic future.
