Buffers needed to cushion us against fiscal and external shocks were depleted by the previous government – Ato Forson

Forson

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson has stated that the previous administration’s incompetence created serious economic challenges for the country.

Presenting the mid-year budget review on Thursday, July 24, 2025, he said there was a complete lack of coordination between the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana, signalling the highest levels of incompetence in the management of the economy.

He said the economy inherited by the current administration was a terrible one.

He told the House that the worsened fiscal situation witnessed under the NPP leadership spilt over into the monetary and external sectors, causing a rapid depreciation of the Ghana cedi.

He indicated that the buffers needed to cushion us against fiscal and external shocks were depleted by the previous government.

Dr. Forson explained that the root of our 2022 economic crisis can be traced directly to an overbearing fiscal dominance marked by reckless spending and corruption, compounded by poor leadership of the previous administration.
