The Minority Caucus in Parliament has opted to boycott the sitting scheduled for Thursday, July 24, 2025.
The Caucus, dressed in black, staged a walkout on the day the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, was slated to present the mid-year review.
In response to their action, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, characterized it as a walkout rather than a boycott.
He emphasized that since the Minority members were present when proceedings commenced, a quorum had been established, and the day’s business would proceed as planned.
Dr. Ato Forson is expected to present the budget at a time when Ghana’s macroeconomic performance has shown improvement.
Inflation has declined from 23.5% in January to 13.7% by the end of June 2025, fostering hopes of achieving single-digit inflation ahead of the 11.9% target.
The cedi has also rebounded strongly, appreciating from approximately GH¢15 to the dollar in January to around GH¢10.45, resulting in modest price reductions in retail markets.
However, manufacturers are adopting a wait-and-see approach to determine if the currency will remain stable within a 60-day pricing framework agreed upon with business groups.
Regarding fiscal matters, the abolition of the betting tax has received widespread acclaim, while the new GH¢1 fuel levy has drawn criticism.
