An aviation expert has described Wednesday’s military helicopter crash as “the darkest Wednesday” in Ghana’s history, calling it “a bad day for aviation.” Dr. Yakubu Akparibu, speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s “Frontline” show, extended his condolences to the families of those who died, including two people he knew personally.

Dr. Akparibu urged the public to avoid speculating on the cause of the tragedy, stating that it is “too early to speculate.” He emphasized the need to wait for the official investigation to be completed by authorities.

“We need to wait until an official investigation by authorities is completed so we will know the probable cause of the accident,” he said.

He noted that the retrieval of the helicopter’s black box is a crucial step, as it could contain vital information that will help investigators determine the circumstances leading to the crash.

While it’s impossible to pinpoint the exact cause at this stage, Dr. Akparibu offered some general insights into aviation accidents. “Aviation accidents, 90 percent of them are caused by human error,” he explained, referring to the crew managing the aircraft. “The 10 percent is caused by failure of the machine, that is the aircraft and then also the systems that operate around it.”

The aviation expert expressed his shock at the incident, particularly upon learning that two of the victims, Dr. Edward Boamah and Murtala Mohammed, were people he knew personally. “When I got to know that the two were involved, I was really shocked,” he said.
