A Volta River Aviation helicopter executed an emergency landing on Monday, August 11, 2024, at Nkawkaw, in proximity to the Nkawkaw bypass within the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region.
Emerging details indicate that the aircraft, a Jet A-1 registered as 9G-AFW, was on a route from Accra to Kumasi when the pilot was compelled to land due to adverse weather conditions resulting in poor visibility in the area.
Fortunately, the pilot and crew members are reported safe.
This incident has elicited considerable reaction on social media, particularly following another helicopter’s emergency landing at the Presby school park in Ajumako Kokoben, attributed to unfavorable weather conditions.
The latter aircraft, bearing registration 9G-ADW and carrying four passengers, encountered poor visibility and turbulent winds mid-flight. In light of deteriorating weather and potential safety risks, the pilot prudently decided to land in an open field, seemingly part of a local school compound.
The unanticipated landing drew large crowds from the surrounding community, many of whom gathered to witness the unusual scene.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the helicopter remained grounded for approximately an hour as the crew monitored weather updates and ensured it was safe to proceed with the journey.
