A 34-year-old woman, Madam Esther Mensah alias Serwaa Akoto, has been hospitalized after allegedly being beaten by soldiers in Bibiani Old Town, a suburb of Bibiani in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.
The victim’s family reported to Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that she is fighting for her life after being assaulted by more than two soldiers.
According to the victim’s brother, the assault was unjustified, and the family has appealed to the authorities to investigate the matter.
He explained that the incident occurred when the woman, who resides near the Bibiani mines, approached the soldiers after a blast affected her home and damaged her television, causing her trauma.
The brother alleged that the soldiers became enraged and severely beat her, leaving bruises on her stomach, chest, and back, and also assaulted her genital area.
The brother further claimed that the soldiers beat other young men in the area who attempted to intervene and report the incident to the mining company.
The victim was admitted to the Bibiani Government Hospital’s Emergency ward and has since been discharged.
However, she suffered a severe attack a day after discharge and was rushed back to the hospital.
The family has reported the incident to the police, and they are seeking justice for the victim.
“It was not just one soldier but soldiers beat my sister as if they were weeding a farm. They beat her mercilessly without any just cause. They stomped on her chest, whipped her, leaving her with bruises. They even went ahead to hit her private part. Some young men in the area came over and helped to send my sister to the yard to report the incident to the management but the soldiers trailed us and beat the young men mercilessly and used the butt of their guns to hit them several times.”
