On August 14, 2025, the Volta Regional Directorate of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), along with other security agencies, seized a large shipment of Tapentadol Hydrochloride tablets at the Kpoglu border.
The drugs, known as “RED,” were found hidden in sacks on a truck traveling from Nigeria to Ghana.
The seizure included about 7,700 tablets, with an estimated value of GH¢11.5 million.
The driver, Oliver Takra, and an agent were arrested and are now with the police. Additionally, two other suspects—a Nigerian man and woman believed to be the intended recipients—are also assisting with the investigation.
According to Mr. Gorden Akurugu, the Volta and Oti Regional Head of the FDA, this operation was part of a routine surveillance.
The FDA stated that the importation violates Section 122 of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), which prohibits the entry of such substances without a permit. Mr. Akurugu noted that medicines can only legally enter Ghana through Kotoka International Airport and Tema Harbour.
Offenders face serious penalties, including up to 25 years in prison.
Mr. Akurugu confirmed that the suspects will be prosecuted and praised the collaborative efforts of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), the National Investigations Bureau, the Narcotics Control Commission, and the National Security for their role in the successful operation.
