Mahdi Gibril, the Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), described former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as an endorser of lawlessness, impunity, and attacks on the presidency.
Gibril based his description on Bawumia’s meeting with Fante Comedy, whom authorities accuse of being part of a group of TikTokers threatening to behead First Lady Lordina Mahama and President John Dramani Mahama.
Police recently arrested Fante Comedy for allegedly hosting individuals who have threatened the lives of the President and his wife and later granted him bail.
Fante Comedy held a live TikTok session where participants expressed joy about a helicopter crash that killed eight people, stating they wished it had been others.
A participant, nicknamed Akosua Jollof, who police are currently pursuing, threatened to behead the First Lady and harm the President.
After Fante Comedy’s release on bail, he visited Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Bawumia urged members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to “remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding” amid what he calls “growing political intimidation.”
In a message to party supporters, Dr Bawumia stated, “I charge all party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution.”
However, Mahdi Gibril declared that the former leader’s decision to host Fante Comedy endorses lawlessness, impunity, and political indiscipline.
He, therefore, advised him to respect his office as a former vice president and stop endorsing lawless individuals.
“If I have any advice, I’ll give it to Bawumia. He should be guided because allowing that young man, whom police arrested for threatening the President and his wife, to visit and embrace him was unfortunate. The young man engaged in a lawless act, yet Dr Bawumia entertained him. These are the same people who will go to Akwatia during the by-election and misbehave all because Bawumia has endorsed their nonsense and impunity. It is unfortunate to have an irresponsible leader like this, someone who makes such disparaging remarks, and you host and entertain him in your house. That is purely unacceptable.”
