The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has disclosed that eight suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the assaults that occurred during the recently held Ablekuma North constituency rerun elections.
He disclosed this at a meeting between the leadership of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
According to him, the eight suspects were arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command and are currently being processed for prosecution.
“The Accra Regional Commander, as of yesterday, said he had eight suspects. Eight suspects have been arrested. They are being processed, and from the advice I had from the Regional Commander, tomorrow or Friday, they will be put before the court.”
Three journalists, as well as some political figures affiliated with the opposition New Patriotic Party, were assaulted during the rerun of the Ablekuma North election in 19 polling stations on July 11 of this year.
The Police have come under pressure to arrest the culprits and prosecute them.
The IGP informed the GJA that the Police Service remains committed to ensuring justice and holding accountable anyone found culpable in the incident.
“We are making progress and we will make sure that whatever happens, justice will be done to those who in one way or the other, did not do their work in a professional manner,” he said.
Meanwhile, he had also assured the GJA that the Service will work with the GJA in guaranteeing the safety of journalists in the upcoming Akwatia By-election.
“We’re ready to work with you. I can assure you that Akwatia will be very safe. We will protect you. No policeman will attack you; we are there to protect you. It is our duty to protect you. We’re assuring you that these things will not happen,” the IGP said.
