Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Tuesday led a high-powered delegation from the Presidency to visit and console the bereaved families of the victims of the August 6 helicopter crash.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang visited the families of the late Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the NDC; Samuel Aboagye, Deputy NADMO Director; Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; as well as the families of two Cabinet Ministers — the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
The Vice President was accompanied by senior government officials, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Deputy Chief of Staff Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Chief of Staff at the Vice President’s Office Alex Segbefia, Senior Presidential Advisor Valerie Sawyerr, former Finance Minister Seth Terkper, and NDC General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, among other dignitaries.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang and her delegation were warmly received, and private meetings were held away from media coverage to allow for direct engagement with the bereaved.
According to Deputy Government Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, the move was aimed at assessing how the families, particularly the spouses and children, were coping in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“The president believed that we should visit each family to find out how they were doing, especially the spouses and the children. Because the president is out of the country, the Vice President led the delegation today to pay visits to each and every one of the victims of the tragedy,” she said.
She explained that the government remains committed to supporting the dependents of the deceased, adding that measures were underway to ensure that children still in school receive the necessary assistance.
She also asked Ghanaians to contribute to the Children’s Support Fund. She disclosed that so far, GHS 2.3 million has been raised since the fund’s launch, with contributions from the government, corporate institutions, and individuals.
“A lot of donations are coming through, so you may want to visit the government communication portal on how you can also donate to the Child Support Fund for the families of the fallen victims,” she added.
