Ralph acted unlawfully, but we should also deal with the unethical conduct of health workers – Nyonkopa Daniels

While many Ghanaians condemn Ralph Saint Williams for his behavior at the Ridge Hospital, the incident also highlights a growing concern about unethical conduct by some healthcare workers, says Madam Nyonkopa Daniels,
Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana.

The peace and security advocate stated that Williams’ approach at the facility endangered the safety and security of healthcare workers and undermined the quality of patient care.

Her comments follow a viral video that showed relatives of a patient physically attacking healthcare workers on duty in the hospital’s emergency department.

Ralph Saint Williams allegedly used Facebook Live and invited others to join him in protesting what he described as neglect by the healthcare workers. He has since received widespread criticism for his actions.

Madam Daniels asserted that Williams misbehaved and should have shown more restraint. She advised him to be more cautious, noting that he is gaining a reputation for lawlessness.

“Ralph, you’re a young man, so take your time,” she noted. “You may have a genuine concern, but the way you approach it will determine whether or not you have a genuine concern. It seems you are gaining notoriety for alleged lawlessness, and you must watch it. You shouldn’t drag everything to social media.”

“Going live on Facebook when patients were on admission and healthcare professionals were taking care of them was unfortunate. He didn’t seek the consent of the patients he captured in his Facebook Live. While we admit that some healthcare workers, especially nurses, don’t act professionally, that doesn’t give you the right to engage in lawlessness. Use the law to deal with it. As a social media influencer, you must be guided and not use violence to resolve your issues,” she said.

Meanwhile, Madam Daniels also admonished the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) not to use this incident to escalate a strike.

She urged the GRNMA to show restraint since the police are currently investigating the matter and a strike would negatively affect Ghanaians.

Madam Nyonkopa Daniels also advised authorities to reform the health sector and address the issue of unethical conduct by healthcare workers, particularly nurses, in public health facilities.
