President John Mahama signed the Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill, 2025, into law, establishing the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146).

This new law seeks to create a sustainable and compliant fisheries sector in Ghana, a key industry valued at over $425 million annually.

The Act introduces significant reforms, including the establishment of an Independent Fisheries Commission to manage marine resources and an expansion of the Inshore Exclusive Zone (IEZ) from six to 12 nautical miles, which protects breeding grounds and benefits artisanal fishers.

Additionally, it imposes stricter penalties for illegal fishing to restore depleted fish stocks and aligns Ghana’s regulatory framework with international standards to prevent trade sanctions.

The Ministry states that this legislation is a transformative step toward building a more sustainable and economically viable industry that secures the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians.
