The Ministry of Defence has announced that the investigation Board established to inquire into the recent Z-9 helicopter crash has formally commenced its work.
A statement issued and signed by Finance Minister with additional responsibilities as Defence Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, disclosed that the members of the board were drawn from the Ghana Air Force and the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
According to him, the United States of America is providing advice and assistance to the board through visiting investigators from the U.S. Air Force.
Dr. Forson stated that the board has 30 days to complete its work and submit a report to the President.
“The Board is chaired by the National Security Coordinator, with membership drawn from the Ghana Air Force and the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
The United States of America is providing advice and assistance to the board through visiting investigators from the U.S. Air Force.
The Board may also invite other relevant experts and institutions, both local and international, to assist with the investigation,” he added.
Background
A military helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, resulting in the loss of 8 lives.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The aircraft departed the capital at 0912 hours en route to Obuasi but lost radar contact and subsequently crashed.
The deceased included Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister of Food and Agriculture; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); and Mr. Samuel Aboagye, a former Parliamentary candidate.
The others were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Amaning Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. Samuel Sarpong was a former Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) during President J.E.A. Mills’ era and later served as Ashanti Regional Minister and Central Regional Minister. Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala Mohammed was also a Member of Parliament representing the people of Tamale Central.
