Police Service performed admirably in Akwatia, but to warrant deserving praise, they must arrest Sofo Azorka – NPP

An aspiring National Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Yeboah, also known as Nana Kay, has called on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno to immediately arrest Sofo Azorka, a National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The National Communications team member stated that there is a need for the politician to be arrested and prosecuted for allegedly threatening the life of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

According to Nana Kay, the police demonstrated a high level of professionalism and conducted the by-election in a manner that prevented any violent incidents, with the exception of the incident involving Sofo Azorka.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he asserted that Azorka’s behavior was criminal and undermined the integrity of the electoral process.

Tensions flared in the Akwatia constituency on Tuesday after Chief Sofo Azorka allegedly threatened the Minority Leader and engaged in a near-physical altercation with an NPP official.

The incident has been widely condemned.
Nana Kay commented on the issue, stating that without the arrest and prosecution of Sofo Azorka, his “rude behavior” would mar the peaceful outcome of the elections.

“So far, so good. We went into an election, and it is over. The election was peaceful, apart from what Sofo Azorka and his boys did against our third Vice Chairman. We expect that he would arrest Sofo Azorka and prosecute him. If he fails to do that, it would undermine the job he and his men did.”

We’ve accepted defeat and congratulated the NDC

Nana Kay confirmed that the NPP has accepted the outcome of the elections.

He stated that although they had hoped to win, they have since lost and will return to the drawing board to identify the reasons for their loss and implement measures to prevent a similar situation in upcoming elections.

Nana Kay admitted that in every by-election, the sitting government has an advantage because constituents often prefer to vote for a candidate from the party in power, seeking development for their community.

He recounted similar scenarios where the NPP won all by-elections under former President Kufour, affirming that voters would want the sitting government to develop their communities and therefore would not vote for the opposition candidate.

“It was our desire to have retained the seat, but we lost, and we have honorably accepted defeat. We will go back to the drawing board and examine the reasons why we lost and do better next time. However, let me also admit that every constituency would prefer development, and so when there is a by-election, they would want to vote for candidates from the party in power. This is understandable. We have witnessed similar situations under former President Kufour, and so it is not surprising,” he added.
