A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) elections directorate, Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, popularly known as Nana Kay, has stated that the party had hoped to win the 2025 Akwatia by-election but was ultimately unsuccessful.
Speaking in an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he acknowledged that while the NPP had put in the effort, their expectations were not met.
Nana Kay, who is currently seeking the position of National Organizer for the party, noted that the election’s outcome was not entirely unexpected.
He explained that, historically, political parties in power often have an advantage in by-elections.
This is because constituents in those areas tend to prioritise development and believe that a candidate from the ruling party can more easily deliver it for them.
“So far, so good. We went into an election and lost, with the victory going to our opponents, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). As a political party, we will go back and conduct a general assessment of the reasons why we lost. But overall, the election was generally peaceful. We did not record any form of violent clashes, with the exception of Sofo Azorka and his associates attacking our Third Vice Chairman and others.
As a political party, we have accepted and conceded defeat and are now preparing for the way forward. We congratulate the NDC’s candidate who won,” he stated.
When asked what may have caused their defeat, he responded, “I cannot confirm what caused our defeat because we are yet to conduct an assessment to find out why we lost, so I will not be able to answer the question.”
