Veteran coach J.E. Sarpong has urged the Ghana national team to prioritise building a cohesive squad to improve its performance.
In an interview on Rainbow Sports, Sarpong stated that the continuous call-up of new players at different times, without a focus on team cohesion, is a major flaw affecting the team’s results.
”We must get an outstanding and consistent team that is both effective and efficient. We should not continue doing what we are doing at the moment and expect positive results,” he said.
When asked about calls for the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo, Sarpong defended the difficulty of the role. “Coaching is a very difficult job. When you observe from afar, you might think it is easy, but it is not. From player call-ups to selections, it’s not an easy task.”
He also suggested that player dissent could be a factor, saying, “If players don’t like a coach, they will deliberately underperform so the coach would be sacked.
The coach is a human being, and there are some players who may not like him and would do anything to get him out.”
Mr Sarpong acknowledged that while Ghana has technically gifted players, they often play for themselves rather than as a unit on the field. He advised the coach to address this challenge and ensure the players work together as a team.
He also called for a strong technical team to provide robust support for the head coach.
