The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested 39-year-old Kwame Mananyi Tuanda for allegedly using a private ambulance to traffic substances suspected to be cannabis.
A statement issued by the police disclosed that the vehicle, a Hyundai Hiace with registration number GX 277-20, was intercepted at Labadi Maami following sustained surveillance.
The police said a search conducted in the ambulance uncovered quantities of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis concealed in sacks.
Officers upon examination of the sacks discovered that seven hundred (700) parcels and four hundred and seventy-three (473) wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis were retrieved.
Investigations reveal that the private ambulance, loaded with suspected narcotics, had been transported from Kpando in the Volta Region to Accra for onward distribution to interested buyers.
The statement added that the suspect admitted that he has been engaging in this illegal activity since 2024.
“Further investigations have established that the suspect originally purchased the vehicle as a regular car and later fitted it with a siren. Before acquiring the Hyundai Hiace, he had used a Toyota Highlander, which he used for the same purpose. He subsequently branded the current vehicle as an ambulance and, aside from using it for drug trafficking, also operated it for transporting dead bodies.
The vehicle has since been impounded, and the exhibits retained for evidential purposes. Arrangements are underway to forward the substances to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis. The suspect is being processed for court while investigations continue,” the statement added.
