Security analyst Andres Asiedu Tetteh has issued a warning to the government, predicting a deterioration in Ghana’s security situation within the next four months.
Mr Andrews Asiedu Tetteh, speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, attributed the rising violence and instability across the country to what he described as the incompetence of key security officials, specifically citing Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak.
Mr. Tetteh was unequivocal in his criticism, stating that while the minister is a “fine politician,” he lacks the necessary knowledge and experience for the security portfolio.
“When it comes to security issues, he is incompetent,” Tetteh said.
He urged President John Dramani Mahama to reassign or remove the minister, warning of dire consequences otherwise.
The analyst noted that his previous warnings had already proven true, with violent incidents escalating as he had predicted.
“I had already warned that if President Mahama refuses to remove him from office, I am giving Ghanaians less than four months; the violent incidents happening across the country will escalate,” Tetteh stated. “Truly, the situation has escalated. It will further escalate if he is not removed.”
He proposed retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Kofi Boakye as a suitable replacement, arguing that his experience makes him the ideal candidate to manage the country’s security.
Mr. Tetteh’s comments also pointed to a broader concern that the government, and specifically the President, may not be prioritising national security.
“It seems the security of the state is not a concern for the President,” he said. “He has appointed incompetent people to manage our security situation, and that is not the best. People are getting displaced, people are dying. This should tell the President that his people in charge of our security are incompetent.”
He also claimed that the security of the state was undermined in the last three months of former President Akufo-Addo’s term, with little concern for public safety.
“I repeat, if President Mahama refuses to remove Muntaka as Interior Minister, we will witness civil war and acts of terrorism. In fact, terrorism is already happening in Ghana because the Bawku crisis is an act of terrorism. The government will not speak the truth about the terrorism occurring in Bawku, but that is the truth. The security situation was already dire before Mahama took over, so appointing an Interior Minister should have been based on that assessment, with a man of operations appointed, not a civilian. The government is overwhelmed and does not know what to do.
He added ”In three months, places where Ghana has long enjoyed peace and stability would be troubled by instability and insecurity. People will no longer enjoy peaceful sleep. For the first time in recent memory, we have people displaced within our borders, and some have even become refugees in Côte d’Ivoire. When you took over, the primary concern was the Bawku crisis, but in the past eight months, we have recorded several security incidents nationwide. This should tell you that something is fundamentally wrong.”
