The Member of Parliament for the Okere Constituency in the Eastern Region, Daniel Nana Addo Kenneth, in partnership with the Okere District Assembly, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Disability Policy Advocate.
The agreement aims to provide a two-year training programme in livestock rearing and poultry farming for 50 persons living with disabilities (PWDs) within the district.
The initiative seeks to create sustainable employment opportunities for PWDs, reducing their reliance on begging for alms. According to the MP, the programme is fully funded by the African Disability Policy Advocate for the duration of the agreement.
In an interview, Daniel Nana Addo Kenneth highlighted the vital role PWDs play in nation-building, emphasising the need for robust support to improve their living conditions.
“We will coordinate and monitor the programme to ensure the right beneficiaries are targeted, as the welfare of persons with disabilities in my constituency remains my top priority,” he stated.
Jeff Tetteh Kavianu, Country Director of the African Disability Policy Advocate, noted that the training initiative will provide significant relief and empower PWDs to become self-sufficient. He revealed plans to expand the programme over time to accommodate more individuals. He also mentioned that the government’s increase in the Disability Fund will allow their support to supplement existing initiatives.
Mr Eric William Ayetey, the District Chief Executive (DCE), stated that the Assembly will conduct household visits to identify PWDs not currently engaged in economic activity and enrol them in the programme.
This effort is aimed at improving their socioeconomic status and preventing them from seeking support on the roadside.
The DCE also reiterated his commitment to collaborating with the MP to secure additional infrastructure projects and human empowerment programmes for the constituency.
