Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak has called for a collaborative effort in strengthening all existing secondary schools so they will be attractive to Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates.

He stated that while access to secondary education is expanding, the demand for some categories of secondary schools was high.

The Builsa South MP noted that the demand for these schools was higher than the available spaces they have in the schools.

He disclosed this at a press conference held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, on the update of the school placement system.

Placements were released on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 8 p.m., and subsequently, we informed all District/Regional directors.

Out of the 603,328 students who sat for the exams, 590,309 candidates qualified for placement into Senior High Schools (SHS), Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS), and Technical and Vocational Institutions (TVIs) across the country.

The Deputy Minister explained that 483,800 candidates (82%) have been successfully placed.

Of this figure, 248,038 are females (51.4%), and 234,783 are males (48.6%).

He however disclosed that 107,509 candidates (18.2%) could not be matched with their initial school choices due to high demand for certain Category ‘A’ schools.

He therefore underscored the need for stakeholders in the sector to work together in ensuring that all existing schools are improved so that no matter where a candidate is located, they will have access to quality secondary, technical, and vocational education.

“As a nation, we must acknowledge that while access to secondary education is expanding, the demand for certain top-tier schools remains higher than their available capacity. It is therefore important that we manage expectations and, more importantly, work together to strengthen all schools. Every Ghanaian child deserves quality education, no matter where they are placed,” he said while speaking on behalf of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

Meanwhile, he has also revealed that the self-placement portal has been activated so those who qualified but could not be placed would do self-placement.

“To address this, the self-placement portal has been activated and is now live. All qualified candidates who were not automatically placed are encouraged to log onto the system and select from schools with available vacancies.”
