Ghanaian historian, Kwaku Darko Ankrah, has asserted that a majority of Ghana’s current political class lacks patriotism and a genuine sense of nationalism.
He believes the country is suffering from a scarcity of individuals willing to work selflessly for the national interest.
In an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem show, Ankrah remarked that modern Ghana has become consumed by “greedy, selfish, and parochial interests.”
The historian made these comments while reflecting on the legacy of the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whom he described as an unrivaled visionary and patriot dedicated to Ghana’s development.
Mr Ankrah highlighted Nkrumah as the primary architect of the independence struggle, acknowledging that other committed individuals also supported the fight.
However, he maintained that Nkrumah was the central figure behind the nation’s quest for freedom.
He contended that while Ghana’s freedom was secured by men and women who sacrificed for the country, that same spirit of nationalism, patriotism, and selflessness is absent today.
The historian urged Ghanaians to learn from Nkrumah’s example if they genuinely wish to preserve his legacy.
“We had men and women who loved the country, were selfless, and dedicated patriots who sacrificed and served Ghana, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. But today, we no longer have that,” Ankrah stated. “What we have today are greedy, selfish individuals who do things for their parochial interests without thinking of Ghana. The spirit of patriotism and nationalism is lost.”
“It is disturbing, and as a people, we have to strive and do better,” he added. “We must learn from the examples of Kwame Nkrumah. He was a nationalist and a patriot whose legacies will forever be with us. In honoring his memory, we must continue to remind ourselves that Ghana needs men and women of integrity to serve it.”
