The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has disclosed that the safety of its staff has come under threat due to illegal mining activities.
GRIDCo says the activities of galamsey, as it is popularly called, pose a threat to its transmission infrastructure.
Speaking at GRIDCo headquarters in Tema on Thursday, September 25, 2025, the Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Engineering and Operations, Frank Otchere, called for urgent action against galamsey.
He said illegal miners are encroaching on transmission tower sites, digging dangerously close to the foundations.
These activities, he lamented, weaken the towers.
He also revealed a disturbing threat to the lives of GRIDCo staff, saying illegal miners shoot at them when they go to a site to work.
“Unfortunately, there are some areas that even when our maintenance teams go there, they get shot at. And some of them have had to run away.”
He said due to the incident, GRIDCo is unable to operate in certain locations without security support.
