Veteran Ghanaian football coach J.E. Sarpong has weighed in on the ongoing CAF Champions League, offering his opinion on the recent dismissal of Gold Stars’ head coach, Frimpong Manso.

In an interview with the sports department of Rainbow Radio 87.5 in Accra, Sarpong was asked about Gold Stars’ decision to sack their coach following a 2-0 home loss to Algerian side J.S. Kabilyle.

Coach Sarpong stated that the decision was misguided, arguing that Frimpong Manso should not be blamed for the defeat.

He stressed that Kabilyle has superior and more experienced players than Gold Stars, and he believes nothing can change the outcome of the return leg in Algeria.

He said that Gold Stars is now effectively out of the CAF Champions League.

“To me, it was a bad or rushed decision. Sometimes football owners in Ghana react to situations without a calm head and then later regret it. Does the team have the same quality of players compared to the Kabilyle team? Kabilyle’s owners are wealthy and invest a lot in buying players. I strongly advise the Ghanaian team to learn a lesson from this and come back stronger. If it was in his contract that he would be sacked should he fail to win the cup, then that’s fine, but since it’s not, it was a bad decision.”
