The Deputy National Director of Elections for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Gibril, has asserted that the party’s victories in the rerun of the Ablekuma North parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations and the subsequent Akwatia by-election provide definitive proof of their allegations that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had rigged the main elections.
Speaking on the Frontline program on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Gibril stated that following the 2024 general elections, the NDC identified that the NPP, in collaboration with the Electoral Commission (EC), had allegedly manipulated the results in the two constituencies in the NPP’s favour.
He informed host Kwabena Agyapong that the NDC possessed sufficient evidence to support the rigging claims, which formed the basis of their legal action. Gibril emphasised that the NDC maintained vigilance and executed a strategic plan that ultimately secured these victories.
He remarked that while Ghanaians had granted them the mandate, a failure to protect the ballot would have unjustly deprived them of their deserved victory. Gibril specifically claimed that in Akwatia, there were several irregularities, including instances of double voting. He argued that the by-election, necessitated by the death of Ernest Kumi, ultimately confirmed their position.
“It was a win that confirmed that the NPP had mastered the craft of election rigging, and so if you fail to plan and execute a plan to dismantle that, they will rig the elections and steal your victory,” Gibril stated.
He assured the Ghanaian populace that the NDC would not take their support for granted, adding, “Ghanaians have affirmed their confidence in this government, and we will not disappoint them. We will deliver on our mandate to the people; that is why they voted for us.”
Mahdi Gibril maintained that the NDC had learned difficult lessons from past experiences and would no longer permit the NPP to manipulate elections in Ghana.
“The NPP is proficient at rigging elections, but this time, we were determined to stop them. We therefore used the Akwatia by-election and the Ablekuma North rerun to prove a point,” he asserted.
Regarding the Tamale Central by-election, he noted that the uncontested declaration of their candidate as the elected Member of Parliament was a historical event. Gibril suggested this outcome proves that “if the NDC maintains and improves upon its current efforts, we can win the 2028 elections. We are not complacent but are pleased that the government’s rating continues to increase. President Mahama is beloved and was voted for, and he will not disappoint Ghanaians.”
