President John Dramani Mahama has restated that the nation has reached a critical juncture in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, where a state of emergency remains an option.
Mr. Mahama noted that while he has received counsel from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), religious leaders, and private individuals advocating for a declaration of a state of emergency in the affected areas, his security advisors have not yet recommended this course of action.
He made these remarks during a dialogue on galamsey held at the Jubilee House on October 3, 2025, while responding to inquiries and contributions from CSOs and other invited groups.
Addressing the “elephant in the room”—the state of emergency—President Mahama clarified his position: “Yes, I have the power to do it, but the President acts not only on authority but on the advice of the National Security Council. As of now, the National Security Council believes we can win the fight against galamsey without resorting to a state of emergency.”
He assured participants that should the National Security Council provide advice to proceed with the declaration, he would not hesitate. “I want to assure that the day they advise me otherwise, that we need a state of emergency, I will not hesitate in declaring one.”
The President affirmed the government’s steadfast commitment to combating illegal mining, asserting that success will be achieved as more troops are deployed and resources are applied to the effort.
President Mahama urged CSOs and advocates to continue to hold the government accountable and demand transparency. He concluded by stressing his personal dedication to the cause: “We will continue to fight, and I believe we will win the fight against galamsey… I don’t gain anything from galamsey. I am not personally involved in galamsey, and I have no interest in it continuing, so you can be sure that we are all on the same side.”
