The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has strongly urged mining companies operating in Tarkwa and surrounding areas to significantly prioritise education within their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the 70th Anniversary Durbar of Fiaseman Senior High School (FIASEC), the Minister underscored the unacceptability of a school of such stature struggling with basic infrastructure, despite its location in a resource-rich mining area.
He emphasized that Fiaseman SHS is a recognized centre of excellence and one of the top-performing schools in the region, yet it currently lacks critical facilities, including a fully equipped science laboratory and a dedicated school bus.
The Minister called upon mining companies in Tarkwa and other parts of the Western Region to make tangible investments in institutions like FIASEC, stressing that these schools are educating the region’s future engineers, environmental scientists, and doctors.
The Minister also expressed grave concern regarding the encroachment on the school’s land. He highlighted that the school was originally allocated 64 acres, but currently only has access to approximately 30 acres due to illegal occupation.
Describing this situation as deeply troubling, the Minister provided assurance that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources will take all necessary steps to ensure the protection and reclamation of the school’s land.
Speaking to the media after the event, the Minister reiterated his position that the Western Region deserves its fair share of national development.
He further disclosed that his Ministry is actively advocating for the construction of a modern emergency mining hospital in Tarkwa to significantly improve healthcare delivery for residents in the area.
