The Upper West Regional Police Command has announced the arrest of two individuals in connection with the recent serial killings in Wa.
One of the suspects, Sherif Abdulai, aged 30, was apprehended at Adabiya, a suburb of Wa, following several weeks of coordinated intelligence operations by the police.
He is alleged to have confessed to committing 15 murders between 2021 and 2025.
Abdulai’s arrest followed the earlier apprehension of the second suspect, Mahamuda Lamin, aged 25, who was detained earlier this month.
According to the Police, Lamin was initially arrested in connection with the recent killing of a night watchman, Mr. Yahaya Issah, at Dobile, near the Wa New Market.
Speaking to the media, ACP Francis Yiribarie, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, stated that Sherif Abdulai, an ex-convict, indicated during interrogation that he has been responsible for a series of killings in Wa and other parts of the Savannah Region.
The Commander disclosed that the suspect reportedly targeted watchmen and, in some cases, mentally challenged individuals during nighttime hours.
“During questioning, the suspect confessed to killing 15 people in Wa Municipality since 2021,” the Commander disclosed. “He also admitted to killing three madmen and two watchmen at Bole, one madman in Banda Nkwanta, and a madwoman in Bamboi. He carries his victims on his shoulder and buries them secretly in nearby bushes.”
The Commander further reported that suspect Sherif Abdulai was arrested in possession of items believed to belong to the late Mr. Yahaya Issah, including a Villoan keypad mobile phone and a solar-powered portable radio.
A subsequent search conducted at Abdulai’s hideout in a bush near the Wa Airstrip led to the recovery of a cutlass with specially designed edges, a bicycle, and a sack containing meat, all of which are believed to be linked to his victims.
ACP Yiribarie disclosed that forensic analysis of the retrieved items is currently underway. Furthermore, investigations are continuing to determine whether any accomplices were involved in the killings.
The second suspect, Mahamuda Lamin, has already been remanded by the Wa Magistrate Court and is scheduled to reappear on October 21, 2025.
The Regional Commander concluded with a message of reassurance to the community:“I wish to assure residents that the Police remain resolute in our commitment to rid our society of criminal elements and ensure justice for families affected by these crimes.”
