NPP Primaries: Save NPP Now demands waiver for Kwabena Agyepong’s GH₵4M fee

October 9, 2025
korang

A group affiliated with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Save NPP Now, has asked the party to grant aspiring presidential candidate Kwabena Agyei Agyepong a waiver for the party’s upcoming presidential primary.

Convenor Kwesi Korang appealed to the Elections Committee and the National Executive Committee (NEC) overseeing the upcoming Presidential Primaries on January 31, 2026, to grant Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong a waiver on the GH₵4,000,000.00.

The aspiring candidate had raised concerns over the GH₵4 million development fee being charged by the party in addition to the GH₵600,000 filing fee.

News broke that the party had given him 48 hours to pay the development fee or risk being disqualified.

Commenting on these developments, Mr. Korang expressed worry over the amount of money being charged, describing it as unprecedented in the party’s history.

He argued that once Ing Agyepong was able to pick his forms, submitted them, and went through the vetting successfully, he ought to be allowed to contest in the January 31, 2026, presidential primary.

”Once Ing Agyepong was able to obtain and file the necessary nomination forms, that alone should be sufficient qualification to contest. He must not be disqualified on account of the development fee.

In line with Article 12 of the Party Constitution, no provision prevents Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong from contesting the presidential primaries once he meets the required criteria. The development fee should be voluntary and should not be used to obstruct any aspirant’s participation.

We therefore call on the leadership of the Party to demonstrate fairness, unity, and goodwill by granting Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong a waiver—as an appreciation for his long service to the party.”

According to him, the former General Secretary was unfairly suspended and not given any appointment when the previous government took over the helm of affairs despite his dedication to the NPP.

”We recall that in 2015, the Party unfairly suspended Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong without just cause. Despite his commitment and sacrifices, when the Party won the 2016 elections, he was not given any appointment or recognition for the entire eight-year period. It would therefore be unfair to require him to pay the same GH₵4,000,000.00 development fee as individuals who served in high-ranking government positions.”

SAVE NPP NOW

IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CALL FOR WAIVER — GIVE KWABENA AGYEI AGYEPONG RELIEF FROM THE GH₵4,000,000.00 DEVELOPMENT FEE

We, the concerned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), humbly appeal to the Elections Committee and the National Executive Committee (NEC) overseeing the upcoming Presidential Primaries on January 31, 2026, to grant Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong a waiver on the GH₵4,000,000.00 development fee to enable his participation in the primaries.

Our humble request is based on fairness, equity, and the enduring service Ing Agyepong has rendered to the Party. The development fee should not serve as a barrier to any aspirant, particularly when it has no constitutional basis and therefore should not be compulsory.

We recall that in 2015, the Party unfairly suspended Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong without just cause. Despite his commitment and sacrifices, when the Party won the 2016 elections, he was not given any appointment or recognition for the entire eight-year period. It would therefore be unfair to require him to pay the same GH₵4,000,000.00 development fee as individuals who served in high-ranking government positions.

Ing Agyepong has dedicated his entire political life to the New Patriotic Party, serving faithfully and contributing immensely to the success of every Presidential Candidate since Prof Adu Boahen in 1992. Granting him a waiver, would be an act of fairness and appreciation for his decades of service.

Once Ing Agyepong was able to obtain and file the necessary nomination forms, that alone should be sufficient qualification to contest.

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong a waiver—as an appreciation for his long service to the party.

Let us show Mr. Agyepong the same unconditional love and respect he has shown for the New Patriotic Party itself.
A waiver is both necessary and deserved.
