The Ministry of Health has requested that an amnesty be granted to Ms. Bernice Aboagye, a Staff Nurse, following a query letter she received concerning her recent outburst during a protest by healthcare workers over several months of unpaid salaries.
A video of the nurse, expressing her frustration over the lack of payment and the resulting financial difficulties, quickly became viral on social media.
During her emotional display, the nurse took a swipe at the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, which subsequently led to the issuance of an official query demanding a formal response.
The nurse has since issued an apology to the Minister, clarifying that her intention was not to show disrespect.
Following the issuance of the query, the Ministry of Health publicly called for an amnesty to be granted.
The Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Tony Goodman, commented on the situation, stating that while the Minister acknowledges the Ghana Health Service’s action, he appeals for leniency.
” The Minister commends the Ghana Health Service for promptly upholding the tenets of professionalism and the Code of Conduct prescribed for health workers.
However, Hon. Akandoh has appealed to the Service to temper justice with mercy in addressing the matter.
According to him, both he and the government welcome divergent views and constructive criticism as part of his commitment to fostering tolerance and openness to diverse opinions.”
The Ministry’s statement further indicated that the Minister admonishes health workers to express their opinions respectfully, without resorting to insults.
”The Minister further urged all health workers to express their opinions responsibly and respectfully, without resorting to insults, as this contributes to the healthy growth and development of the health sector.
The Ministry wishes to emphasize that it has no objection to demonstrations, as they are legitimate expressions of frustration and a constitutional right of every citizen. However, the Ministry will not condone the use of abusive language or acts of indiscipline during such demonstrations.
The Ministry of Health also wishes to use this opportunity to remind all health professionals to be circumspect in their public communications and social media engagements.”
