The Accra Metro Director of Education, Mrs. Justine Ivy Apawu, has underscored a strategic agenda aimed at significantly improving student performance, particularly the pass rate for candidates taking the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Mrs. Apawu is driving an initiative to achieve a 100 percent pass rate to secure the Accra Metro a top position on the National League Table.
Mrs. Apawu disclosed that upon her assumption of office in 2023, the BECE pass rate she inherited was a disappointing 41.1 percent.
To effectively address this challenge, she immediately implemented a series of targeted interventions and strategies.
She noted the success of these measures, highlighting that the pass rate saw a substantial increase from 41.1 percent to 69 percent in 2024, with preliminary results for 2025 projecting a further climb to above 70 percent.
”When I came in 2023, the results I met was 40.1 percent. I was not happy and so I decided to put in so many interventions and last year (2024) the results we had 69 percent and in 2025, the results are encouraging. The schools the candidates got, several of them are all grade A schools and so happy for that. I moved from 41.1 percent to 71 percent in two years. So achieving the 100 percent is possible.”
She emphasised that many successful candidates from 2025 secured admission into Grade A schools, which is a testament to the effectiveness of the interventions. The ultimate goal, she insisted, is for the Accra Metro to achieve a Presidential Award for educational excellence.
Mrs. Apawu’s remarks were made on the sidelines of a presentation ceremony on Sunday, October 12, 2025, where the Member of Parliament for the Odododiodoo constituency, Nii Ashie Kote, donated trunks and mattresses.
The donation benefited 400 candidates who successfully passed the 2025 BECE and gained admission into boarding institutions.
The Metro Director of Education expressed profound gratitude to the MP for his generous support, acknowledging that the costly items would provide significant financial relief to parents.
Outlining her future plans for education in the metro, she pledged to continue working closely with the MP and other key stakeholders to continually improve academic results, maintaining the 100 percent target for the upcoming year. She consistently encourages students to study diligently and advises parents to offer unwavering support to their children’s academic pursuits.
Mrs. Apawu also acknowledged several challenges confronting the metro, with infrastructure being a key concern.
She recognized the government’s ongoing efforts to address these issues but issued a compelling appeal to the Ghanaian public and corporate entities to complement governmental initiatives.
”But we have a lot of problems. Infrastructure is key. The government is doing it’s best but I keep saying that government money is like a wedding cake; you have to cut so that every region and district would have its share. So we need stakeholders to come and help us.”
In a proactive move to motivate educators, she announced plans to organize a Best Teacher Awards event this year and is appealing for sponsors to support the initiative, which she believes will further incentivize teachers to perform at their best.
