Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie, Member of Parliament for the Odododiodio constituency, has stated that sexual relationships between teachers and students are unacceptable and must be widely condemned.
He described such an act as not only unprofessional and unethical but also deeply undermining to the integrity of the teaching profession.
The MP made these remarks on the sidelines of a presentation of trunks and mattresses to over 400 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates heading to boarding schools nationwide.
The ceremony took place on Sunday, October 12, 2025, in Akoto Lante, a community within the constituency.
Mr. Ashie further called for authorities to implement strict sanctions against teachers who engage in any form of sexual misconduct with their students.
In a direct quote, he emphasised the need for punitive action: “I think it is highly condemnable. This is something that should never happen. If any teacher takes that step to coerce a student, especially one who is not of age, that teacher is not fit to be in the classroom and must also be dealt with in accordance with the law. That will be a major deterrent.”
Call for Ga Language Teachers and Welfare
Beyond the issue of misconduct, the MP also called for the increased recruitment of teachers, specifically emphasizing the need for Ga teachers within the constituency and the wider Ga state.
The MP stated he has made it a priority to ensure a greater presence of Ga teachers in the area.
He stressed that the language is the community’s heritage, and as part of his commitment, he has launched an initiative to empower Ga teachers through financial and non-financial incentives.
Furthermore, he has initiated a sponsorship program for any constituents who wish to pursue a career in teacher training, particularly those specializing in the Ga language.
Mr. Ashie affirmed the need to reward teachers for their sacrifices and hard work to prevent them from abandoning the profession for other opportunities. He added that President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to substantially improving the working conditions of teachers.
Tertiary Education Scholarship Scheme
The MP encouraged his constituents, particularly the students, to excel academically at the secondary level, as those with strong grades would be offered scholarships to pursue tertiary education.
To manage this, he has inaugurated a seven-member board to oversee the scholarship scheme, which targets 400 individuals for tertiary education and an additional 100 students at the basic and secondary levels.
