The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Julius Neequaye Kotey, is set to introduce instant driver’s license issuance starting in 2026.
Mr. Kotey confirmed the Authority has completed the installation of all necessary infrastructure for this initiative.
The CEO shared this development during an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline program, hosted by Kwabena Agyapong.
He clarified that the instant issuance will apply only to renewals and replacements, stating, “If you are doing renewals, replacements, we will issue an instant license. But if you are applying for a new license, you would have to wait for the three months.” New applicants will, therefore, still face a three-month waiting period.
Mr. Kotey reiterated the DVLA’s commitment to fulfilling its duties in accordance with the law.
He also addressed the historical shortage of licenses he inherited upon taking office.
He noted that his predecessors had not printed cards for eighteen months, resulting in a backlog of 440,000 licenses. An investigation revealed that the contractor was owed a significant sum for services rendered.
According to the CEO, he successfully appealed to the contractor, and the backlog has been addressed, with the over Ghc60 million owed now fully paid. The DVLA has now printed licenses up to August, but there remains an issue with some 2022 and 2023 issuances due to uncaptured data. Consequently, the Authority has directed those affected to undergo a free recapture process.
