Solomon Owusu, Communications Director for the United Party (UP), has stated unequivocally that the party is not intimidated by the threats of legal action issued by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the use of its name.
Mr. Owusu directly challenged the NPP to proceed with their threatened lawsuit, stating, “He dared the NPP to head to court like they have threatened if they have the balls.” He characterized the potential legal challenge as a frivolous matter that would ultimately prove inconsequential.
Speaking on the program Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he asserted that the United Party would not even bother to hire legal counsel for its defense, going so far as to suggest that the party’s security guard would be sufficient to represent them.
Solomon Owusu maintained that the NPP possesses no exclusive right to the UP name and, therefore, cannot successfully pursue legal action against his party. He attributed the NPP’s frustration to its perception of the UP as a rightful legacy that it negligently failed to officially register.
“The UP is a name that has existed for years, and yet the NPP failed to register it. If they were interested in the UP name, they should have registered it. It is not their property,” Mr. Owusu argued. “Should the NPP decide to head to court, we will not bother hiring a lawyer; we will allow our security guard manning our gates to defend us in court. This would be a frivolous case if they drag this to court. No court in Ghana, nor a judge, can order the UP to drop its name.”
Mr. Owusu emphasized that the United Party is firmly established and that no amount of maligning or attacks will succeed in destroying it. He reiterated the party’s mission to disrupt the established duopoly of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP. He contended that the NPP, in particular, is concerned that the UP’s existence will undermine its own, driving it to discredit the new party at every opportunity.
When questioned about assurances given by Kennedy Agyapong—that he would invite the founder of UP and its followers back to the NPP upon his election as presidential candidate—Mr. Owusu scoffed at the proposition. “We would be the ones who would rather invite him to the United Party. He lacks the capacity to make that call.”
He further offered a prediction regarding the NPP’s upcoming primaries: “Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will certainly win the NPP primaries. He will win not because of his popularity—he is unpopular—but because of the seeds they sowed, which Kennedy Agyapong was a part of.”
