The Minority Caucus in Parliament has noted that the economic gains which government has touted have not been reflected in the lives of Ghanaians.
Leader of the side, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, stressed that despite the macroeconomic gains, these are yet to bring real relief to the ordinary Ghanaian.
He made the remarks on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, when the House resumed sitting from recess.
The Effutu Member of Parliament argued that stabilisation means little if the youth remain unemployed and families still struggle with the cost of living.
He stated that the mass dismissals across key state institutions represent a direct assault on the integrity of the public service.
He said competent officers who were employed have been sacked from office under directives from the Chief of Staff.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin indicated that these mass dismissals are without due process, without cause and in clear violation of constitutional and statutory provisions.
”These are politically motivated acts that undermine professionalim, weakens state institutions and worse public confidence in governance.”
The recent labour unrest while Parliament was on recess, he noted, shows clearly public discontent.
He referenced that over 200 junior doctors have worked for ten months without pay while over 800 remained unposted.
”Newly posted teachers and nurses have also worked for months without salaries . These are the stories of hardship people face. A government that fails to pay it’s frontline workers cannot claim to care for its people.”
He emphasised that the NPP government whilst in office initiated the One District One Factory policy to drive industrial growth and create sustainable jobs through private sector participation.
However, government actions in recent months show a clear lack of commitment to that ambition, he declared.
In a rebuttal, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga disagreed, stating categorically that the government has achieved a lot in these few months it took over power.
He highlighted some achievements of the current government, noting the President Mahama’s government has been “excellent” so far.
He mentioned the stabilisation of the Ghanaian Cedi, the single-digit inflation recorded, the stable power supply, the upgrade of Ghana’s economy by Fitch, and the positive economic gains recorded by the NDC government as the achievements recorded under President John Dramani Mahama.
“Mr. Speaker, I am proud to say that so far, so excellent. The energy sector is doing very well and electricity has remained on empowering growth. So far, so excellent. The economy is rebounding and Ghana once again, is gaining economic respectability globally. So far, so excellent.
“The Ghana cedi is gaining strength and stabilizing. So far, so excellent. Inflation has come down to single digit and prices are coming down and life is becoming affordable to the ordinary Ghanaian. So far, so excellent,” he stated.
