Janet Nabla, former Founder of the People’s National Party (PNC), has asserted that the prominent presence of women in key positions across Ghana is a direct result of the groundwork and legacy established by the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
Ms. Nabla conveyed that the passing of the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement was deeply shocking, yet Ghanaians are profoundly comforted by her immense impact on the nation’s social, political, and economic landscape.
“The late former First Lady was a figure of immense energy, and while her death is shocking, we draw comfort from her enduring legacies, her positive national impact, and her commitment to the empowerment of women,” she remarked.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Ms. Nabla noted, “She fulfilled the mission God placed her on this earth to accomplish. Her positive impact will speak for itself. The Affirmative Action Bill, which has since been passed into law, was her original brainchild. She was exceptionally active in transforming the political scene to allow women to occupy centre stage.”
She further elaborated, “It would be impossible to fully enumerate her contributions. She was a strong, visionary, and dedicated leader, and most importantly, she empowered women from all walks of life.”
Ms. Nabla credited the influence of Mrs. Rawlings with encouraging her to contest and secure the General Secretary position within the People’s National Convention (PNC), a party of which she is no longer a member.
“Irrespective of any differences, the legacy of the late Agyeman-Rawlings will remain with us forever,” she affirmed.
Ms. Nabla expressed particular admiration for the upbringing the late former First Lady provided for her children, including Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for the Klottey Korle constituency. She highlighted that the training instilled in them “a profound sense of care for humanity, empathy, dedication, and unwavering commitment to their duties in all their undertakings.”
She expressed optimism that Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings would one day emerge as a presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and be elected as the President of the Republic of Ghana.
“I am confident that the NDC will one day elect Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as its presidential candidate because her candidacy would enhance the NDC’s credibility and reaffirm its dedication to probity, accountability, and transparency,” Ms. Nabla stated.
She concluded by stressing that, largely through Mrs. Rawlings’ efforts, Ghanaian women are now more confident, courageous, and increasingly ascending to and holding key positions. Furthermore, political parties are now actively electing women as presidential candidates. Mrs. Rawlings herself was the first to break this record by establishing her own party, the National Democratic Party (NDP), representing it, and fundamentally changing the face of politics in Ghana.
