Stephen Atubiga, founder of the National Liberation Congress (NLC), has stated that he remains a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr. Atubiga departed from the NDC in 2021 to establish his own political party, yet on Monday, October 27, 2025, he asserted his continued affiliation with the NDC.
He made this clarification during an interview on the “Frontline” program on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm with host Kwabena Agyapong.
“Let me make this correction quickly. I am still a member of the NDC; however, I can perhaps be regarded as the prodigal son. I am still NDC, and I shall remain a member today, tomorrow, and forever,” he stated.
He further clarified that the challenges he had previously raised primarily concerned the party’s internal structures and his desire for the party to remain committed to its core values.
Mr. Atubiga’s comments were made while he was responding to questions about his memories of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
Stephen Atubiga described Mrs. Rawlings as a formidable woman who effectively championed the cause of women’s empowerment.
He indicated that the legacies of the late former First Lady will endure, serving to inspire more women to aspire to higher office.
“Her death is a very significant blow to many of us. I am extremely pleased with how the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama have honoured her memory. She was a force to be reckoned with. She set outstanding examples, and it is not surprising that all political parties and Ghanaians are honouring her. She and her husband were instrumental in laying a solid foundation for our democracy and development,” he commented.
He also added that Mrs. Rawlings maintained a strong connection to the party even after she left to form the National Democratic Party (NDP).
Finally, Stephen Atubiga revealed that efforts were actively underway to facilitate Mrs. Rawlings’ return to the NDC prior to her untimely passing.
