The MPs who have declared for Bawumia are 65, but we’ve kept the names of two for strategic reasons – Suhum MP

October 27, 2025
Frank-Asiedu-Bekoe

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, has asserted with confidence that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will secure the nomination as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate.

The lawmaker stressed that the former Vice President is poised to be elected to represent the NPP, regardless of any challenges.
He elaborated that Ghana’s political history indicates a trend where first-time presidential contestants from the two major parties have not achieved victory in the general election.

Mr. Asiedu Bekoe, affectionately known as “Protozoa,” noted that the Members of Parliament who have declared their support for Dr. Bawumia have confidence in his competence, leadership qualities, and proven ability to unite the NPP and ensure an electoral victory.

He further disclosed that a total of 65 MPs have declared for Dr. Bawumia, though the names of two are being strategically withheld.

”Historically, no candidate has won the presidential election on their first attempt. Beyond this historical precedent, Dr. Bawumia presents the best option for the NPP in 2028. Sixty-five MPs have declared their support for him, but for strategic reasons, the names of two others have been temporarily withheld. Dr. Bawumia is demonstrably more competent, a unifier, and the only candidate who can guarantee victory for the NPP,” he stated.

Addressing criticisms, he dismissed claims that Dr. Bawumia was solely responsible for the NPP’s recent electoral defeat, arguing that the loss stemmed from a confluence of multiple issues.

”One cannot singularly attribute our defeat to Dr. Bawumia. As MPs, we recognise that his verifiable track record, diligence, and competence position us to secure victory. He is the only candidate who can truly unite and reconcile the NPP. Reconciliation efforts under a Bawumia candidacy will be less contentious and costly compared to other aspirants in the race,” he explained.

He concluded: “We firmly believe that the NPP will certainly secure victory in 2028 if we elect Dr. Bawumia as our candidate. We will return to power. He is a humble man who is deeply dedicated to the transformation of this country.”
