The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has formally expressed its profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama following the official launch of the free tertiary education initiative for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

Atsu Homadzi, President of the GFD, declared the initiative a highly commendable action, asserting that the government deserves praise for fulfilling this key campaign commitment.

”We are immensely grateful to President John Dramani Mahama,” stated Mr. Homadzi. “The provision of free tertiary education for PWDs is unprecedented. When an administration prioritises PWDs, it is incumbent upon us to convey our appreciation. Accessing tertiary education represents a significant obstacle for many of our members due to financial constraints. We therefore extend our deepest thanks to President John Dramani Mahama for this vital policy.”

He continued: “This policy will enable a substantial number of PWDs to pursue higher education, ultimately empowering them to contribute to national development using the knowledge and skills they acquire. This is a comprehensive free tertiary education package that will cover academic user fees, accommodation costs, and all other related expenses.”

In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr. Homadzi also commended the President for the concurrent increase in the allocation of the District Assembly Common Fund for PWDs, raising it from 3% to 5%.

He further emphasized the challenges PWDs face in securing employment and other opportunities. Consequently, he stressed that it is imperative for the government to include PWDs in the Adwumawura initiative and other relevant policy frameworks.

Atsu Homadzi concluded by affirming the organization’s commitment to collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure that PWDs are fully and effectively integrated into policy formulation processes.
