Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Amasaman, Akwasi Afrifa-Mensah, has issued a stern caution to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against allowing the upcoming presidential primaries, slated for January 31, 2026, to cause internal division.
Mr. Afrifa-Mensah asserted that the party has a long history of successfully navigating internal elections, emphasizing that this primary is neither the first nor will it be the last.
He stressed the need for members to maintain a cohesive front, regardless of their preferred candidate.
He opined that immediately following the election of a flagbearer, the party’s focus must shift to uniting unequivocally behind the chosen candidate to secure victory in the 2028 general elections.
The former legislator called for discipline among the ranks, advocating for a decent campaign discourse and a renewed commitment to party unity.
Lamenting the current state of affairs, Mr. Afrifa-Mensah highlighted a disturbing trend where party loyalists are actively antagonizing one another and refusing communication based solely on the candidates they support.
He noted that this divisive behaviour has unfortunately permeated from the national steering committee down to the polling station level.
”Following January 31, 2026, regardless of the winner, we will need to unify the party and solidly rally behind that person to ensure we secure victory in the 2028 general elections. The current internal squabbles are creating needless divisions within the party.”
He further reminded members of the party’s democratic track record: “This primary election is not new to us; we successfully held one during Professor Adu Boahen’s era, twice during former President Kufuor’s tenure, and through the era of former President Akufo-Addo and Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen. I appeal to all supporters to demonstrate love and civility in their language, knowing that after January 31, we must all unite and support our elected candidate.”
