Nana Owusu, a communication team member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly admonished the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to diligently prosecute all individuals implicated in acts of corruption, misappropriation, and theft of state resources during the tenure of former President Akufo-Addo.
He characterized corruption as a major canker that has persisted across successive administrations, asserting that its unchecked nature is actively detrimental to the nation’s development.
Owusu lamented the recurring trend where, after initial public outcry and investigation, individuals accused of such criminal activities are often allowed to evade punishment.
Appearing on the “Frontline” program on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he expressed profound shock at the alleged scale of financial malfeasance, citing scandals involving the National Service Authority and the Buffer Stock Company, among others.
He opined that while due process mandates that those involved must be given the opportunity to defend themselves, any proven wrongdoing must result in them facing the full rigors of the law.
Nana Owusu also told host Kwabena Agyapong that the properties allegedly acquired by some individuals cited in these scandals raise serious questions about the necessity of lifestyle audits.
“The amount of money allegedly stolen through these scandals is alarming. If people have stolen money and we have the evidence, they must be punished severely,” he stated. “The Buffer Stock scandal and the monies involved are shocking. I am, however, worried that these cases will be delayed, allowing a new administration to take office, which could result in the accused escaping justice. We have seen instances where a new government takes over and cases pending against some individuals are subsequently withdrawn.”
He further asserted, “We must not permit people to exploit state power to steal our resources and deprive Ghanaians of development. It is a serious matter, and we must not allow it to happen again. We have individuals stealing state resources and then the state goes to secure loans equivalent to the very amounts that were stolen.”
Nana added that it was during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor that the establishment of fast track courts was witnessed, a measure intended to expedite the hearing of cases involving corruption and the theft of state resources.
