The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kwesi Afreh Biney, has disclosed that the institution has disbursed over GH¢5 billion in pension payments in 2025.
He made this announcement at the 2025 Media Connect held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, where management engaged with journalists on SSNIT’s activities, its challenges, gains, and plans for the future.
He affirmed that SSNIT remains financially strong and sustainable despite past challenges.
Mr. Biney noted the scheme started from a humble beginning with fewer contributors but now caters to over 257,000 pensioners who are paid each month.
He stated that total membership is in excess of 4 million, though only 2.1 million are active contributors. He reiterated that SSNIT has disbursed over GH¢5 billion in pension payments so far this year.
Furthermore, he indicated that SSNIT has implemented measures to enhance its digital presence with new digital tools and is working to enhance service delivery with technology, including providing feedback mechanisms.
The engagement, which is part of activities marking the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) 60th anniversary celebration under the theme, “A Legacy of Service,” aims to strengthen collaboration between SSNIT and the media in intensifying public education on social protection in Ghana.
The engagement was to deepen collaboration with the media in promoting accurate, balanced, and impactful reporting on social security issues.
It also offered SSNIT the opportunity to provide an update on its ongoing transformation initiatives and, most importantly, create a platform for open dialogue, feedback, and partnership to enhance public understanding and participation in the SSNIT Scheme.
Additionally, the “Media Connect” (or this initiative) was to reinforce the media’s role as critical partners in driving awareness and trust in the Scheme, particularly among informal and self-employed workers
