Second Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has vehemently denied claims that he was under the influence of alcohol during a parliamentary plenary session this week, describing the assertions as “ridiculous.”
The Weija-Gbawe Member of Parliament (MP) stated categorically that he neither consumes alcohol, smokes, nor uses any form of illicit substance. He therefore advised the Ghanaian public to disregard these claims and treat them with the contempt they deserve.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM with host Kwabena Agyapong, Mr. Shaib attributed the allegations to political malice, specifically targeting the opposition.
”It is absurd that I am being accused of consuming alcohol. This is purely propaganda being pushed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC),” he stated. “How could they even claim that I was hyperactive or consumed alcohol? This is purely propaganda by the NDC, and I think they have to cease these actions. They should be guided because some of the things they do do not make sense. As I sit here, I do not consume alcohol, I do not smoke, and I do not do drugs.”
Mr. Shaib further addressed the root of the controversy, explaining that his assertive manner in debate is often misinterpreted. He emphasized that he is neither a pushover nor someone who can be intimidated, asserting that his tendency to forcefully push back when disrespected is what some attribute to substance use.
”I am not a ‘bad boy,’ but I will not allow anyone to intimidate me,” he continued. “I have never in my life used drugs, and I will never do that. I don’t even know what cannabis, cigarettes, or other illicit substances look like. I don’t know why people are alleging this, especially when I was simply calling for former President Akufo-Addo to be credited with the stability of the Cedi. Why would that be interpreted as consuming alcohol?”
