A man allegedly set his wife, five children, and a seven-month-old grandchild ablaze at Denkyira Akyempim in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
The man, identified as Yaw Afriyie, reportedly carried out the act while the victims were asleep in a single-room apartment.
Afriyie allegedly locked the door, poured a substance suspected to be petrol, and set the room on fire, burning all seven family members beyond recognition.
He then took his own life by hanging himself in a nearby cocoa farm.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect and his wife had been experiencing marital challenges, although the motive behind the horrific act remains unknown.
Reporting on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Ebenezer Manso-Cudjoe stated that the individual in question had reportedly become impotent.
Furthermore, he had allegedly neglected his financial obligations to his wife, children, and grandchild.
Consequently, the responsibility fell on the wife until she was compelled to leave her matrimonial home and seek refuge in her family house.
Subsequently, a friend of Yaw Afriyie informed him that his wife was allegedly engaging in an extramarital affair with another man.
Yaw Afriyie then proceeded to his wife’s family house, knocked on the door, and claimed he was there to provide her with financial assistance.
However, the wife refused to open the door. Yaw Afriyie then obtained a padlock, locked the door, and subsequently set it ablaze after pouring petrol on it.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and security agencies in Dunkwa-on-Offin arrived at the scene but were unable to rescue the victims.
The bodies have since been deposited at the Dunkwa Government Hospital morgue for autopsy, while police investigations are underway.
