The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has strongly condemned the attack on the an anti-illegal mining operation carried out by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) near Bronikrom–Hwediem in the Ahafo Region.
Addressing Members on the floor of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Bagbin described the incident as both disturbing and unacceptable.
He said also worrying that the attack was allegedly incited by a sitting Member of Parliament, the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, who further fot a senior Member of the House involved, Collins Dauda.
He stated that while he was yet to be briefed on the matter, he will condemn the attack.
The Speaker noted that the taskforce established to combat illegal mining activities across the country faces growing resistance and danger in carrying out its duties.
“No one has denied that the attack took place, and we must all condemn it,” Rt. Hon. Bagbin stressed. “The people of Ghana look up to us as beacons of hope, and it is our collective duty to uphold the values and standards that reflect the integrity of our great nation.”
The Speaker told Members that parliamentary privileges are not absolute, and must be exercised responsibly and in accordance with the laws of Ghana.
He assured the public, particularly the security agencies, of Parliament’s full cooperation in all investigations related to the incident and other pending investigations involving Members of Parliament.
