Workers outraged as Union leaders Propose “Meagre” 15% Base Pay Hike, Suspect Collusion

November 5, 2025

A group of members of organised labour has expressed profound disappointment and discontent regarding the behaviour of the leadership of organised labour towards the ongoing 2026 base pay negotiations.

Mr Isaac Donkor, immediate past national chairman (SSA-UoG), stated that the average Ghanaian worker is grappling with high utility tariffs, abnormal taxes, and a rising cost of living.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 86.5FM, he noted that it was expected that the leadership of labour unions would have consulted all the various unions associated with organised labour to deliberate on the proposal at the 2026 base pay negotiations.

He opined that it is unacceptable for their leaders to present a meagre proposal of 20%, which they later reviewed downward to 15% on day one.

“We are disappointed in the 20 per cent proposed by our leaders. At the negotiation table, the figure was reduced to 15 per cent and later further reduced to 5 per cent. It is our belief that our leaders are in collusion with the government and undermining workers.”

He stated that they expected not more than 50 per cent or less than 35 or 25 per cent, considering the cost of living in the country.

“The posture of the leadership of Organised Labour, in our view, does not reflect the collective interests of Ghanaian workers, especially those on the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), nor does it represent the magnitude of suffering across the country.”

Meanwhile, he has announced that the disappointed members are planning to seek redress in court.
