Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, has praised one if his predecessors, Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang, for his significant contributions during his tenure, particularly the introduction of the Self-Employed Enrolment Drive (SEED).

Mr. Afreh Biney acknowledged that the initiative has achieved remarkable milestones and stated the importance of commending the former Director-General under whose watch it was launched.

SEED was introduced to actively encourage self-employed individuals and workers in the informal sector to enroll in the SSNIT pension scheme.

Speaking at the 2025 symposium organized by SSNIT in commemoration of its 60th anniversary celebration on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, Mr. Afreh Biney declared his intent to build upon this success in expanding coverage.

Since its inception, SEED has successfully enrolled over 100,000 self-employed individuals and has consequently generated substantial revenue for the Trust.

The Trust had set a collection target of GH₵46 million for SEED, a figure that has since been surpassed, crossing GH₵50 million.

The Director-General noted that as they celebrate the anniversary, they are focused on expanding coverage to ensure that every worker in Ghana, whether in the formal or informal sector, is adequately captured.

”And here, I would like to commend one of my forebears, the past Director-General Ofori-Tenkorang, for the great work done with the SEED programme. We salute you, Sir.”

Commitment to a Stronger Scheme

He further emphasised that SSNIT remains committed to making the scheme stronger, more inclusive, transparent, and responsive to the changing dynamics in the world of work.

He assured that this transformation would be executed in collaboration with the Pension Regulatory Authority and the Ministry of Labour and Employment and other stakeholders.

Mr. Afreh Biney stressed that every worker in Ghana deserves income security during old age.

To this end, SSNIT will continue to expand coverage by making its services more accessible.

This commitment informed their decision to introduce alternate service channels by entering into arrangements with banks, leading to the launch of the SSNIT inside the banking hall initiative.

EcoBank is the first partner bank, with 27 more expected to join by the close of the year.

The agenda, he stated, is to ensure that Ghanaians have easy access to SSNIT’s services in every district across the country.
