Police investigate the death of a 16-year-old Siano Soccer Academy player after alleged abuse

November 8, 2025

The Homicide Unit of the Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into the death of Ransford Owusu, a 16-year-old junior footballer of Siano Soccer Academy in Accra.

A statement issued by the Police and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi revealed that Ama Asantewaa, mother of the deceased, reported to the Amasaman Police that her son, who had fallen ill and died on February 28, 2025, had earlier confided in her that his coach, Ibrahim Anyass, had sexually abused him.

The case was subsequently taken over by the Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters, where suspect Ibrahim Anyass was invited for questioning.

He was interrogated, his statement was taken, and he was later granted bail while investigations continue.

The Police indicated that a review of the medical reports submitted by the deceased’s mother from both the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital (Children’s Hospital) in Kumasi showed that the teenager was treated for liver- and kidney-related conditions before his death.

The Police further revealed that it has initiated an investigation into a viral video depicting the coach engaging in inappropriate behavior with a minor.

It has thus requested the public to provide any credible information that could facilitate or support the ongoing investigation.

“Meanwhile, following a viral video involving suspect Ibrahim and a minor in a compromising situation, Police have extended investigations into the matter, and we would therefore like to urge all persons with any credible information that can assist the investigation to contact the Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters or the nearest Police Station.”
